• Can I visit a mosque if I am not Muslim?

Almost always, yes. There is no rule against it, apart from the central sanctuaries in Mecca and Medina, which are restricted. Telephone ahead or look for visitor hours, go at a quiet time rather than just before a congregational prayer, dress modestly, and take your shoes off where everyone else does. Women are usually asked to cover their hair inside the prayer hall and most mosques keep scarves by the door. You are not expected to pray or to join in; sitting at the back is normal. Avoid walking directly in front of someone who is praying, and ask before you photograph people. Practice varies between mosques, so if you are unsure about something, asking is welcomed rather than awkward.
• What should I wear to a mosque?

Clothes that cover your shoulders and your knees. Long trousers or a long skirt and a top with sleeves is right for anyone. Women are generally asked to cover their hair in the prayer hall; a scarf loosely over the head is enough, and most mosques have spares. You will take your shoes off, so socks without holes are a kindness to yourself. Nothing else is expected: you do not need to dress in a way that imitates Muslim clothing, and doing so is not required or particularly appreciated. How strictly this is applied differs from mosque to mosque and from country to country.
• If I visit or start asking questions, will someone try to convert me?

Somebody may tell you what they believe, because you asked. Sustained pressure is much rarer than people expect, and the more common experience is being offered tea. If it does happen, saying 'I am just interested, thank you' is a complete answer and will be accepted. On this platform specifically: nothing you read is recorded against you, nobody is notified that you are here, there is no progress bar towards becoming Muslim, no reminder sequence, and no follow-up you did not ask for. Nobody can be credited for anyone's belief, because there is no field anywhere in the system that could carry the credit — that is a deliberate prohibition, not an omission.
• What should I cook if I have a Muslim guest?

Ask them — it takes one message and removes all the guesswork. Failing that: anything vegetarian or fish is safe, with no alcohol in the cooking and no pork anywhere near the serving spoons. Avoid wine in sauces, lard in pastry, gelatine in desserts and animal rennet in cheese if you can; those are the four that catch people out. You do not need to buy certified meat for one guest, and most would much rather eat a good vegetable dish than have you go to trouble and get it wrong. Label dishes if there is a buffet. Muslims differ about the finer points — cheese, some additives, trace alcohol in flavourings — so your guest may accept something another Muslim would decline.
• Why do some Muslim women cover their hair, and why do others not?

Because the texts about dress are read in more than one way, and because dress carries meanings beyond religion. The main passages are Sūrat an-Nūr 31 and Sūrat al-Aḥzāb 59 — this platform cannot show you the words, because no licensed Quran edition is loaded, and quoting from memory is not acceptable here. The majority position across the schools of law holds that covering the hair in front of unrelated men is obligatory. A minority position, argued by some modern scholars, reads the requirement as modesty in dress without a specific obligation to cover the hair. Alongside that, many women cover for reasons of identity, family or culture, and many who believe it is obligatory do not do it. Covering is also legally compelled in a small number of states and legally restricted in others, which means a woman's head in public is frequently somebody else's political argument. The reliable thing is not to infer what a woman believes from what she is wearing, in either direction.

• Are women equal in Islam?

It depends on what the question is asking, and a single confident answer would be misleading. On the questions Islamic sources treat as spiritual — moral responsibility, reward, access to God, the obligation to seek knowledge — the texts and every school of law say the same thing about men and women. On questions of law and role, classical Islamic jurisprudence assigns different rights and duties: notably in inheritance shares, in testimony in certain financial matters, in divorce procedure, in maintenance obligations, and in who may lead a congregation. Muslims disagree sharply about how to read that material now. Some hold the classical rulings are fixed; some argue they were tied to specific social arrangements and that the underlying principles require different rules today; some distinguish what the texts require from what custom added. There is also a plain historical point worth separating out: much of what is done to women in Muslim-majority countries — forced marriage, denial of education, so-called honour violence — is argued against by Muslim scholars on Islamic grounds, and treating it as simply 'what Islam says' concedes the argument to the people doing it. Anyone who gives you a tidy answer to this question, in either direction, is leaving something out.
• What about the violent verses people quote?

They exist, they are quoted by people arguing in every direction, and the honest answer has three parts. First, this platform will not quote them to you: no licensed Quran edition is loaded, so there is no verified text to display, and a verse reproduced from memory in an argument about violence is the worst possible place to be approximate. The references most often cited are Sūrat at-Tawbah 5 on one side and Sūrat al-Māʾidah 32 and Sūrat al-Baqarah 256 on the other. Second, how these passages are read depends on things that are not in the verse: the occasion it addresses, the sentences immediately around it, and how classical commentators related general and specific commands. A verse about a particular treaty being broken in seventh-century Arabia reads very differently with and without that frame, and the frame is not optional scholarship — it is how the text has always been read. Third, Muslims themselves disagree about the scope of some of this material, and pretending otherwise is not a defence. If you want to test a source, check whether it gives you the reference, the surrounding verses and at least one named commentator. Almost nothing quoted in public arguments survives that test, from either side.

• What does sharia actually mean?

Two words get collapsed into one in English. Sharia is the divine law as an ideal — what God requires — and fiqh is the human scholarly effort to work out what that is, which is why fiqh has schools, disagreements and change over time and sharia in principle does not. The overwhelming bulk of the material is personal: how to pray, wash, fast, marry, trade, inherit, treat parents, keep a contract. Criminal penalties are a small fraction of it and are the part meant when 'sharia law' appears in a political argument. The penalties are also the most contested part among Muslims: their evidentiary requirements are deliberately severe, whether a modern state can legitimately apply them at all is argued about, and the countries that claim to do so are criticised on Islamic grounds by a great many Muslim scholars. Separately, 'sharia in the West' usually turns out to mean private religious arbitration for things like a religious divorce, which has no force in civil law and binds nobody who does not choose it.
• Why are there different kinds of Muslim?

Two different kinds of difference get mixed together. The first is the Sunni–Shia division, which began as a dispute about who was entitled to lead the community after the Prophet's death in 632 and developed theological and legal consequences over centuries. Roughly speaking Sunnis are the large majority worldwide; Shia Muslims are the majority in Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain and substantial minorities elsewhere, and are themselves divided into Twelver, Ismaili and Zaydi traditions. The Ibadis of Oman are a third branch, as old as the division itself. The second kind of difference is the schools of law — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali among Sunnis, Ja'fari among Twelver Shia — which are traditions of legal method rather than sects, and disagreement between them has been treated as legitimate for most of Islamic history. Sufism is neither: it is a tradition of inward discipline found inside both Sunni and Shia Islam. Which school predominates where is a matter of how traditions spread historically, not of nationality, and this platform never assumes yours from your country.
• What actually happens if I say the declaration of faith?

In Islamic terms, you are Muslim. There is no further step required, no authority that ratifies it and no register it is entered in. In practice, in many communities two witnesses are present and a certificate is issued — scholars differ on whether witnesses are required or simply customary, and the certificate is an administrative convenience for things like burial or pilgrimage paperwork, not a religious requirement. You do not have to change your name, dress differently, tell anyone, or do everything at once; learning the prayer takes a few weeks and nobody competent will rush you. On this platform: nothing is announced, no feed shows it, no counter increments and nobody is credited. If you choose to keep a personal record of it, that record is encrypted on your device and the servers here cannot read it — which also means that if you lose your recovery material, we genuinely cannot recover it for you. In some countries a change of religion has civil-law consequences, and that is a question for a lawyer in your own jurisdiction as well as a scholar.
• Do I have to tell my family if I become Muslim?

No. There is no religious obligation to announce it, and there are places and families where announcing it is genuinely unsafe. Many people wait months or years; many tell one person first. Muslim scholars generally advise weighing harm, and the obligation to treat your parents well does not disappear because you disagree with them about religion — it is one of the most emphasised duties in Islamic ethics. This platform holds nothing that would tell anyone for you: religious status is never published, an explorer account is not marked as such anywhere another user can see, there is no badge, and no general user can send you a message first. If your situation involves a risk to your safety, that is not a question for an article or for a community forum — take it to someone qualified who can hear the specifics, and to a local support service if you are in danger.
• Is it rude to ask a Muslim about their religion?

Generally no, and most people would rather be asked than have somebody guess. A few practical points. Asking somebody to account for something done by Muslims elsewhere in the world puts them in a position no individual should be in. Asking a woman about her clothes is a question about her body more often than the asker intends. 'What do Muslims think about X' will frequently get an honest 'I do not know, and Muslims disagree', which is a real answer rather than evasion. And someone who does not want to be the person who explains Islam at work is entitled to decline. If you would rather not ask anyone, that is what this surface is for: everything published here is readable without an account and without anyone being told you read it.
• Can a Muslim marry someone who is not Muslim?

  This needs a qualified scholar

This is not a question an article should answer, and the reason is that the answer changes with facts about you: which of you is Muslim, what the other person believes, which school of law is being followed, and what the civil law of your country does with a religious marriage. In outline, so you know why it needs a person: classical jurisprudence distinguishes the case of a Muslim man marrying a Jewish or Christian woman from the case of a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man, and treats them differently. Contemporary scholars differ on both, some substantially. Civil consequences — the validity of the marriage, custody, inheritance, immigration — depend entirely on jurisdiction and are not a religious question at all. Take it to a qualified scholar who can ask you questions back, and to a lawyer where the civil side matters. This platform routes questions with consequences of this kind to a human, and no software here is permitted to answer them.
• Does Islam allow a mortgage, or interest on a loan?

  This needs a qualified scholar

Interest — ribā — is prohibited, and that much is not disputed; the principal reference is Sūrat al-Baqarah 275. Everything after that is disputed enough that you need a qualified person rather than a page. The live questions are what exactly ribā covers in a modern banking system, whether a conventional mortgage is permitted where no Islamic alternative is realistically available, whether the products marketed as Islamic finance are structurally different or only differently worded, and how necessity is weighed against the prohibition. There are serious scholars on several sides of each of those. A finance contract is also a legal instrument with consequences for your household for decades, which is precisely the category this platform refuses to have answered by an article, by a community vote or by software. Bring the actual contract to someone qualified; the answer depends on its terms.

• I have a medical condition. Should I fast in Ramadan?

  This needs a qualified scholar

This needs a doctor and a qualified scholar, in that order, and it is not answered here. What is worth knowing in advance is that being excused is part of the law rather than a concession: illness and travel are named exemptions, and Sūrat al-Baqarah 185 is the reference usually given for them. Whether a missed day is made up later or substituted by feeding someone depends on whether the condition is temporary or lasting, and on which school is followed. Diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, an eating disorder, and any medication on a fixed schedule all change the picture, and some of them change it a great deal. A general article that told you it was fine, or that it was not, would be guessing about your body. Ask your clinician what fasting would do to you, then ask a scholar what follows from that — and this platform will route the second question to a person rather than attempting it.

• How does inheritance work in Islam?

  This needs a qualified scholar

Islamic inheritance is a fixed-share system rather than a matter of preference: specified relatives receive specified fractions, the principal reference being Sūrat an-Nisāʾ 11 and the verses around it, and the amount a person may direct by will is limited. Working out an actual estate is a calculation with a name — farāʾiḍ — and it depends on exactly who survived, in what relationship, and sometimes on which school of law is followed; Sunni and Shia schemes differ significantly on some relatives. It also has to be reconciled with the civil succession law wherever the assets are, which frequently does not match. This platform will not compute anybody's shares. Getting it wrong takes property from someone entitled to it, usually from the least powerful person in the family, and it is not recoverable once distributed. Take the actual family tree to someone qualified, and get the civil side looked at by a lawyer.
