• If I visit or start asking questions, will someone try to convert me?

Somebody may tell you what they believe, because you asked. Sustained pressure is much rarer than people expect, and the more common experience is being offered tea. If it does happen, saying 'I am just interested, thank you' is a complete answer and will be accepted. On this platform specifically: nothing you read is recorded against you, nobody is notified that you are here, there is no progress bar towards becoming Muslim, no reminder sequence, and no follow-up you did not ask for. Nobody can be credited for anyone's belief, because there is no field anywhere in the system that could carry the credit — that is a deliberate prohibition, not an omission.
• Are women equal in Islam?

It depends on what the question is asking, and a single confident answer would be misleading. On the questions Islamic sources treat as spiritual — moral responsibility, reward, access to God, the obligation to seek knowledge — the texts and every school of law say the same thing about men and women. On questions of law and role, classical Islamic jurisprudence assigns different rights and duties: notably in inheritance shares, in testimony in certain financial matters, in divorce procedure, in maintenance obligations, and in who may lead a congregation. Muslims disagree sharply about how to read that material now. Some hold the classical rulings are fixed; some argue they were tied to specific social arrangements and that the underlying principles require different rules today; some distinguish what the texts require from what custom added. There is also a plain historical point worth separating out: much of what is done to women in Muslim-majority countries — forced marriage, denial of education, so-called honour violence — is argued against by Muslim scholars on Islamic grounds, and treating it as simply 'what Islam says' concedes the argument to the people doing it. Anyone who gives you a tidy answer to this question, in either direction, is leaving something out.
• What about the violent verses people quote?

They exist, they are quoted by people arguing in every direction, and the honest answer has three parts. First, this platform will not quote them to you: no licensed Quran edition is loaded, so there is no verified text to display, and a verse reproduced from memory in an argument about violence is the worst possible place to be approximate. The references most often cited are Sūrat at-Tawbah 5 on one side and Sūrat al-Māʾidah 32 and Sūrat al-Baqarah 256 on the other. Second, how these passages are read depends on things that are not in the verse: the occasion it addresses, the sentences immediately around it, and how classical commentators related general and specific commands. A verse about a particular treaty being broken in seventh-century Arabia reads very differently with and without that frame, and the frame is not optional scholarship — it is how the text has always been read. Third, Muslims themselves disagree about the scope of some of this material, and pretending otherwise is not a defence. If you want to test a source, check whether it gives you the reference, the surrounding verses and at least one named commentator. Almost nothing quoted in public arguments survives that test, from either side.

  • Sūrat at-Tawbah, verse 5
  • Sūrat al-Māʾidah, verse 32
  • Sūrat al-Baqarah, verse 256

The verse is named and not shown. This platform displays Quran text only from a licensed edition verified against a checksum, and none is loaded yet — a verse typed in from memory is not an edition.

• What does sharia actually mean?

Two words get collapsed into one in English. Sharia is the divine law as an ideal — what God requires — and fiqh is the human scholarly effort to work out what that is, which is why fiqh has schools, disagreements and change over time and sharia in principle does not. The overwhelming bulk of the material is personal: how to pray, wash, fast, marry, trade, inherit, treat parents, keep a contract. Criminal penalties are a small fraction of it and are the part meant when 'sharia law' appears in a political argument. The penalties are also the most contested part among Muslims: their evidentiary requirements are deliberately severe, whether a modern state can legitimately apply them at all is argued about, and the countries that claim to do so are criticised on Islamic grounds by a great many Muslim scholars. Separately, 'sharia in the West' usually turns out to mean private religious arbitration for things like a religious divorce, which has no force in civil law and binds nobody who does not choose it.
• Why are there different kinds of Muslim?

Two different kinds of difference get mixed together. The first is the Sunni–Shia division, which began as a dispute about who was entitled to lead the community after the Prophet's death in 632 and developed theological and legal consequences over centuries. Roughly speaking Sunnis are the large majority worldwide; Shia Muslims are the majority in Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain and substantial minorities elsewhere, and are themselves divided into Twelver, Ismaili and Zaydi traditions. The Ibadis of Oman are a third branch, as old as the division itself. The second kind of difference is the schools of law — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali among Sunnis, Ja'fari among Twelver Shia — which are traditions of legal method rather than sects, and disagreement between them has been treated as legitimate for most of Islamic history. Sufism is neither: it is a tradition of inward discipline found inside both Sunni and Shia Islam. Which school predominates where is a matter of how traditions spread historically, not of nationality, and this platform never assumes yours from your country.
• What actually happens if I say the declaration of faith?

In Islamic terms, you are Muslim. There is no further step required, no authority that ratifies it and no register it is entered in. In practice, in many communities two witnesses are present and a certificate is issued — scholars differ on whether witnesses are required or simply customary, and the certificate is an administrative convenience for things like burial or pilgrimage paperwork, not a religious requirement. You do not have to change your name, dress differently, tell anyone, or do everything at once; learning the prayer takes a few weeks and nobody competent will rush you. On this platform: nothing is announced, no feed shows it, no counter increments and nobody is credited. If you choose to keep a personal record of it, that record is encrypted on your device and the servers here cannot read it — which also means that if you lose your recovery material, we genuinely cannot recover it for you. In some countries a change of religion has civil-law consequences, and that is a question for a lawyer in your own jurisdiction as well as a scholar.
• Is it rude to ask a Muslim about their religion?

Generally no, and most people would rather be asked than have somebody guess. A few practical points. Asking somebody to account for something done by Muslims elsewhere in the world puts them in a position no individual should be in. Asking a woman about her clothes is a question about her body more often than the asker intends. 'What do Muslims think about X' will frequently get an honest 'I do not know, and Muslims disagree', which is a real answer rather than evasion. And someone who does not want to be the person who explains Islam at work is entitled to decline. If you would rather not ask anyone, that is what this surface is for: everything published here is readable without an account and without anyone being told you read it.
